Welcome to the page about the events that were being held at the Ancient Olympics!!! This page will contain the events that were being held at the Ancient Olympics. We still hold many of the same events we held then. For example, Equestrian, Javis, long Jump, and many more. Many of the same events that were held thousands of years ago, are still being held at todays Olympic games.
A few of the events that were being held thousands of years ago, are still being held in the present day. For example, the third foot race, which was called dolichos, was introduced in 720 B.C. The athletes had to qualify and have their names written in lists to be introduced to the games. Only young people were allowed to participate in the games. At first, the Olympic games lasted one day, but overtime, it eventually grew to 5 days. The stade race, was a short sprint measuring between 180 and 240 metres.
One of the events that was in the ancient Olympics, was the Penthalon. The Penthalon was a series of events. The events that were included in the Penthalon was; the Discus Throw, Javelin, Running, and long jumping.
In the Discus Throw, the discus was made of stone and later on, of iron. The technique of the same was very similar to today's discus throw.
In long jumping, to increase the distance of a jump, the athletes used stone or lead weights, called halteres. They held on to the halteres until the end of their flight, andthen jettisionedthem backwards.
In Running, there were three different kinds of contests. They were, the stade race, diaulos, and the dolichos. The stade race, was the pre-eminent test of speed. The diaulos, was two stade races. And last but not least, the dolichos, which ranged from 7 to 24 stade races.
There were also many other Olympic events. Like Wrestling, Boxing, Equestrian events, and Pankration. Wrestling was valued as a form of military practice without the weapons. The round would only end if one of the contestants admitted defeat.
In Boxing, boxers wrapped straps, or himantes, around their hands to strengthen their wrists and steady their fingers. These straps were soft, but overtime, boxers started using hard leather straps, which often caused disfigurement in the other players face.
Equestrian events included horse and chariot races. These took place in the Hippodrome. The Hippodrome was a wide, flat and open space.
Pankration was a primitive form of martial art including wrestling and boxing. It was considered one of the toughest sports. The Greeks believed that Pankration was founded by Theseus when he defeated the strong Minotaur in the labryrinth. THE PENATHLON STARTED AS A SPORT SIMILAR TO WRESTLING, and EVERY MALE IN GREEce HAD TO BE IN THE OLYMPICS. The greeks had many events, and we still hold almost all of the exact same ones every four years.
almost all of these events are held in the present day olympics. Some of the events that are still held are boxing, running, long jump, and equestrian. these events are a few of the many events that we still hold.
